In the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the P 8 locomotives were converted to feature the Giesl flat ejector, a modification referred to by the staff as "Quetschesse." During performance tests conducted at a speed of 50 km/h, it was demonstrated that this modification resulted in a 14% reduction in coal consumption compared to locomotives equipped with a regulated vacuum brake system. Between 1966 and 1967, a total of 75 locomotives were rebuilt at the depot "Einheit" in Leipzig. Their operation was limited to the three Reichsbahn directorates of Cottbus, Erfurt, and Magdeburg. From these locations, the locomotives were primarily deployed for passenger transport, often pulling Reko coaches and other types of wagons.
