TRIX N 16630 DB Class 01 Steam Locomotive
A rail star with a short tender
An icon of German railway history will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2025, as the first example of the legendary 01 series was completed in 1925 at the famous Borsig locomotive factory in Berlin. The German Federal Railway took over 166 examples after the war. These elegant and reliable Pacifics then shaped the economic miracle years and for a long time the express train traffic in the Federal Republic. Until the 1960s, the racers with over 2000 hp and speeds of up to 130 km/h were at home on many main routes. When delivered, many of these then ultra-modern locomotives had a short tender of the 2'2 T30 type, as at the end of the 1920s there were still numerous short turntables from the days of the state railways. The long 2'2 T34 was then standard on the Federal Railway, which enabled more flexible use with a water supply of 34 cbm. But there were also exceptions. Short tenders continued to run for a long time on the 01s in the Osnabrück and Rheine depots. They ran to Dutch border stations as scheduled. Due to the early electrification of the main lines, large turntables were no longer installed there, so that the DB express train locomotives could only be turned with short tenders. From the mid-1960s, these services were converted to diesel traction and most of the "short" 01s were given large tenders. This was also the case with 01 058, which was relocated to Hof in 1964 and decommissioned there four years later after 40 years of service.
