Its engine, mounted behind the front axle, helped the Z1 achieve outstanding roadholding and enabled it to reach extreme cornering speeds. A host of other technological tidbits, such as its chassis fully galvanized in one piece, its body parts made of thermoplastic material and, last but not least, its retractable doors, made the Z1 a special automobile from the very beginning. The Z1 was built purely by hand and exactly 8000 units were produced between 1989 and 1991.
