The Class 2095 locomotives, procured from 1958 onwards, formed the backbone of the ÖBB's diesel-powered narrow-gauge lines for decades. They were used in passenger and freight service, particularly in rollbock/rollwagen (transporter wagon) operations.

The Class 2095 locomotives operated on the narrow-gauge lines of the Ybbstalbahn, the Bregenzerwaldbahn, the Krimmlerbahn, the Waldviertelbahn, and on the so-called "Krumpe." The latter was the now-closed local railway from Ober-Grafendorf to Gresten.
