The Class 145 electric locomotive was developed by ADtranz (later Bombardier Transportation) for freight transport in Germany starting in the late 1990s. It belongs to the first generation of the modular TRAXX platform and represents a further development of the Class 120, but without the additional equipment required for passenger service.
The Class 145 locomotives are technically based on the almost identical Class 146, which is designed for passenger service with a higher top speed (160 km/h) and features such as a destination display. The Class 145, on the other hand, is designed for a top speed of 140 km/h and optimized for freight service.
Between 1997 and 2000, a total of 80 locomotives of this class were put into service. Their primary area of operation was initially freight service for Deutsche Bahn, particularly for DB Cargo. Technically, the locomotives are equipped with modern three-phase asynchronous motors, a power output of 4,200 kW, and electric regenerative braking.
