The V 100 of the German State Railway (DR), often referred to as the "V 100 East," was one of the most important medium-power diesel locomotives in the former GDR. It was developed from the early 1960s onward to gradually replace older steam locomotives in train service.
A total of over 1,100 locomotives of this class were built between 1966 and 1985 at the VEB Lokomotivbau "Karl Marx" in Babelsberg. The individual production series differed in specific details. For example, the front sections and roofs of the first locomotives (V100 003 – 043) had a visually different design than those of later production locomotives. Especially in the early days, the locomotives received distinctive paint schemes that made them stand out from the otherwise rather uniform fleet, appealing to railway enthusiasts.
