For shunting passenger and freight cars in railway stations, the German Federal Railway (DB) relied on smaller shunting locomotives from an early stage. A further development of the Köf 11, with power transmission via cardan shafts and additional axle gears, was presented by Gmeinder in 1965. 251 of these shunting locomotives, initially designated Köf 12, were delivered to the German Federal Railway as Class 333. To enable staff reductions, a large proportion of the locomotives were equipped with radio remote control from the late 1980s onwards. These locomotives were designated as Class 335.
