To accelerate the transition to new traction systems, the German State Railway (DR) procured a total of 378 Class V 200 locomotives (later Class 120) from the Soviet Union between 1966 and 1975. Since the locomotives lacked factory-installed train heating, they were primarily used in freight service. Later, silencers were added to reduce the noise level of the engines. Due to the loud engine noise, the locomotives quickly became known as the "Taiga Drum".
