In July 1977, the Y 8001 shunting locomotive (called a "Locotracteur" in France) rolled out of the Moyse factory as the first of a series of 525 units designed for shunting operations in SNCF stations, marshalling yards, construction sites, and workshops. More powerful and longer than its predecessors, these locomotives could also replace certain locomotives used for delivering light freight trains on the line.

The Y 8000 series trains received a livery based on the BB 63500 series, featuring a dominant orange color complemented by brown and white. Most of them retained this paint scheme throughout their service, sporting all successive SNCF logos up to the current "Carmillon" livery. However, some were repainted to reflect their specific service assignments: Fret, Infra, or even TER.

The model has limited compatibility with analog control systems.
