The diesel locomotive class, nicknamed "Babelsberg" due to its origin, was built in series by the "Karl Marx" locomotive works starting in 1962. The new Class V 180, with its B'B' couplings, derived its designation from its installed engine power: 2 x 900 hp. For universal use, including hauling passenger trains, the locomotives were equipped with a centrally mounted boiler. The maximum speed was 120 km/h, which was perfectly adequate on the main lines of the GDR; only a very few lines were designed for higher speeds. Locomotives of the V 180 series, and from 1970 onwards the 118 series, were in service throughout the GDR.
