The CSD Class 477.0 represents the last and most technically advanced steam locomotive series of the Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD). A total of 60 locomotives were built between 1951 and 1955 by CKD (CKD Sokolovo in Prague) and evolved from the preceding Class 476.1.

■ ... The locomotives were designed as powerful express train tank locomotives with a 2’D2’ wheel arrangement (4-8-4T design) for heavy passenger train service and, with a service weight of around 131 tons, were considered among the heaviest tank locomotives in Europe at the time.

The three-cylinder locomotives reached a top speed of around 100 km/h and had a starting tractive effort of almost 110 kN. The locomotives were particularly popular with the crews due to their modern technology for the time. They were equipped with many technical innovations, including a mechanical grate feeding system, which ensured better heat distribution. This significantly reduced physical strain, as it automatically fed the fuel into the boiler and distributed it on the grate.

... Visually, the Class 477.0 locomotives were distinguished by their striking lines, featuring a streamlined smokebox, Witte smoke deflectors, and an elegant, often colorful livery with decorative stripes. This earned them the nickname "Papoušek" (Parrot) in everyday service. The locomotives were primarily used in heavy commuter traffic around metropolitan areas, but also in freight service. The series was gradually withdrawn from service until 1981, due to the ongoing electrification of the rail network and the introduction of powerful diesel traction.

The "Parrots" have always been a source of great enthusiasm for railway enthusiasts worldwide. Therefore, it is not surprising that some examples have been preserved in museums and are partially operational.
