In 1943/44, over 100 Class 52 locomotives were built at the Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques (SACM) locomotive factory in Graffenstaden near Strasbourg. In 1945/46, a further 17 locomotives were added for the SNCF. There, the Class 52 was designated 150 Y. A special feature of the locomotives was their shorter chimney, which allowed them to comply with the French loading gauge. The 150 Y locomotives hauled both heavy freight and passenger trains in the SNCF's Eastern Region. They remained in service there until the end of the 1950s.
