The Prussian S 10 was one of the most important express train locomotives of the Royal Prussian Railway Administration (KPEV) and marked a significant step in the development of powerful steam locomotives for high-quality passenger service. Built from 1910 onwards, it was designed to meet the growing demands of express train service and to haul heavy trains at high speeds over long distances.
The locomotives featured a four-cylinder compound steam engine and the characteristic 2’C wheel arrangement, which offered a balanced combination of power and smooth running. The S 10 proved its worth in service, particularly on the main lines in Prussia, where it enabled fast and comfortable train connections.
With its elegant appearance, typical Prussian design, and technical sophistication, the S 10 is considered one of the most fascinating steam locomotives of the pre-war era.
After the dissolution of the Prussian State Railways (K.P.E.V.) with the founding of the German Reichsbahn, the locomotives of the Prussian S 10 series were transferred to the new Reichsbahn's fleet. There, they initially continued to operate under the designation Class 17. The turmoil of war took the locomotives to other countries, where some remained in service for a considerable time.
