The E 03 series was created in the mid-1960s and was intended to be the most powerful DB locomotive to date for heavy passenger trains. 145 series locomotives were put into service between 1970 and 1974. The last 30 locomotives (starting with 103 216) received an enlarged driver's cab, making them 700 mm longer.
Towards the end of the series' official service life, at the suggestion of many fans, a locomotive was painted in a new traffic red livery with contrasting frames. Similar to the classic 103 in red/beige. ROCO sponsored this livery. As a special feature, each locomotive received a dedication text under the right-hand side window of the driver's cab at the launch.
