From 1976 onwards, the French State Railways procured a total of 237 BB 7200 multi-purpose locomotives for use on the French DC network. The locomotives, with their distinctive "nez cassé" (broken nose), were designed by the Frenchman Paul Arzens. Some locomotives had special buffers for hauling the gauge-changing "Talgo III RD" trains. These buffers were painted red for identification.
