For continuous electric operation on the Dresden-Prague railway line, the CSD, together with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (GDR), procured a total of 35 multi-system locomotives, which could be used on both the 3 kV direct current network of the CSSR and the 15 kV alternating current network of the GDR. After testing a prototype, fourteen production locomotives were put into operation in 1991 and stationed at the Decin locomotive depot.
With the founding of the freight division CD Cargo in 2007, nine locomotives were allocated to the new company. Since these were the only CD Cargo locomotives that could be used on the German railway network until 2016, all locomotives were gradually modernized and painted in the new company colors.
In addition to their primary use for transporting trains at the Decin/Bad Schandau border crossing (and onward to Dresden and Leipzig), they are occasionally used in domestic traffic and also reach the border stations to Poland.
