It was the most powerful DB locomotive to date and was intended to haul heavy passenger trains. Between 1970 and 1974, 145 series locomotives were put into service. The last 30 locomotives (from 103 216 on) were given an enlarged driver's cab, making them 700 mm longer. After completing her official service period, many fans of this locomotive class suggested that a new traffic red livery with a colour-contrasting frame be designed for the locomotive. This new design is similar to the classic 103 locomotives, which feature a red/beige colour combination. The ROCO company acted as a sponsor for this livery. As a unique feature during the presentation, the locomotive received a dedication text under each right-hand side cab window.
