Many of the locomotives that remained in the country after the war were converted to oil firing by the DR. Until they were replaced by modern diesel and electric locomotives, the Class 44 locomotives formed the backbone of heavy freight service. Due to their enormous tractive effort, these locomotives were also known as "Jumbo." The last of these heavyweights were retired from service by the DR in 1986.
