The express steam locomotive 01 202 is a piece of living engineering history. It was built in 1936 by Henschel & Son in Kassel for the then German Reichsbahn. After the war, the locomotive became part of the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) and was primarily used in southern Germany. The 01 202 saw its last service from the Hof depot, where it was also frequently seen on the inclined plane.
The 01 202 arrived in Switzerland on October 2, 1975. There, Werner Bühlmann from Münsingen and a group of incorrigible optimists restored it to working order through volunteer work in their free time. After more than 20 years of effort, the locomotive is now considered the most beautiful operational example of the 01 series and is presented in impressively well-maintained condition. Since 1991, the Pacific 01 202 Association has been responsible for all aspects of the locomotive's maintenance and operation.
