As the pinnacle of freight transport, the Class 151 locomotives hauled the heaviest ore trains in Western Europe between the North Sea ports and the Peine-Salzgitter steelworks, as well as into the Saarland region, starting in 1976. These trains carried loads of up to 5,700 tons. They were operated exclusively in double traction with automatic couplers, as the conventional screw coupling would not have withstood the extremely high tractive forces.
