Over 21,000 compartment coaches of various designs were manufactured. The numerous side doors allowed for rapid passenger exchange. Initially, the compartments were enclosed; access from one compartment to another was via the exterior doors. The running boards, which extended the entire length of the coach, were for the conductors, who moved from compartment to compartment while the train was in motion. Prussian compartment coaches typically ran in complete train sets. The German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) still had 11,903 compartment coaches of this type in service in 1952 – despite the fact that World War II had decimated the fleet.
