In terms of construction, these 1,000 HP locomotives were designed for speeds of 70–80 km/h, meaning that they could be used on main lines as well as their primary field of operation on branch lines. At the beginning of the 1950s, 164 class 86 locomotives were still available in the GDR. In 1970, 162 engines received an EDP-compliant running number. They were retired from service from 1973.
